The world is abuzz with welcoming Caitlyn Jenner (FKA Bruce), into the world after her official debut in Vanity Fair. As with most controversial news, there’s the good, the bad, and the ugly; my post here today is simply begging the question: Is Caitlyn Jenner that big a deal?
I suppose to answer that question, we have to ask: who is Caitlyn, and what does she represent? Caitlyn, after living a majority of her life and dubbing it a lie, decided that facing her true self was the only way to worth spending the rest of her years. Her choice represents a new exciting age of seizing the day, being your full self, and most importantly, not feeling the need to be someone you aren’t on someone else’s behalf. All the things I’ve mentioned aren’t abstract ideas, they aren’t phenomenally profound or new. So why is Caitlyn Jenner such a big deal?
She’s a big deal because of the very fact that people in our day and age insist on making her small. The fact that there are people who are compelled to compare her version of heroism to a war solider’s in attempts to make her cause irrelevant. She is a big deal because she is a human, who continuously chooses to brave insecurity and scrutiny, to set the standard for a new normal. She’s a big deal because behind your screens, with the anonymity the internet gives us, there are hundreds of thousands of people who are damning her to hell, for trying to feel at home in herself for the first time in her life.
In fashion, we celebrate the unorthodox, and haute couture is a perfect example of fashion that tends to fall outside of the normcore lines and is heavily celebrated for it’s “strangeness” and creative expression. So why is it that life doesn’t imitate art? Why is it that being yourself – in every way- is such a daunting topic for society?
So I suppose you could say what Jenner is doing isn’t that big a deal, she’s doing what just comes naturally to her, right? Why is social media blowing up? In my opinion, her importance lies with the rest of us. It’s our question to answer, because it’s the state of our society that breeds our responses. Caitlyn Jenner said, “Isn’t it great that someday you”ll be normal? To just blend it with society? Put it this way, I’m the new normal.”
And I sincerely hope she is, viva la Caitlyn.
